I have a summary in my pinned post if you haven’t seen it already
Buts it’s adventure exploration themed following Sonic running away from being the soon to be king of Sol, who is hosting iblis in his body. Blaze, his sister, is pursuing him to try and get him back to fulfill his duties
The pirate theming is just as a side flavor really, how they travel and all
And the only sea monster is chaos, shadows just a comically large fish, and other characters are ocean people. Not explicitly fish characters (like idw mimic, though they do exist) but moreso hybrid mutations caused after thousands of years post the planets (sol and mobius thanks to Solaris) merging and causing an apocalypse (years since merge retconned from the summary post)

fgchjgfh its multiple things, he n knuckles are kinda close actually, being the first person shadow met and be kind to him on angel island-
rouge lets him in on the fact that gun would snatch him up if they found shadow, being wanted and all. so after a couple years of just kinda keeping tabs on shadow he lets him start working with him out of his food truck, since shadows gonna need money eventually (which upgrades to a brick and mortar near the beginning of arc 1)
and shadows just really good at his job, very fast, and laser focused on completing tasks, righhttt up until sonic shows his face, he gets pretty sidetracked during that
and knuckles does bitch at him about it hbjdjhhjdf, a lot.
but knuckles just keeps him around bc hes good and hed have no where else to go if he didnt. he wants to avoid shadow potentially doing even More illegal things if he wasnt employed under him
